Dr. Suess commissioned quilt in progress! A friend from work requested this quilt for a friend of hers...we're mid-move around these parts, so much of my fabric is packed up - thankfully i had the sense of mind to leave some out!

I also have a few finishes that were completed and sent up north to a family friend who owns a non-profit facility for people with mental and physical disabilities and provides them with housing, community and skill training - a wonderful organization and I'm proud that a few of my quilts are hanging on some of the walls!

my image quality here is pretty poor...once we move i will have ample amount of outdoor space to take gorgeous pictures - so be prepared for some awesome backdrops & better lighting!

i did a simple nine-patch pattern with a few larger blocks thrown in. the color is actually purple - not brown! I used some fabric from my stash that have an unknown origin and some joel dewberry (love!).

must get back to work to finish the Dr. Suess quilt today!

Happy 4th of July! This long weekend has provided me an opportunity to do a bit of quilting - definitely nice to catch up!

I made this wall hanging a few weeks ago for my aunt:

I then worked up a quilt using Denyse Schmidt's new fabric line. I put the squares on point - I think this will be perfect for a picnic quilt! just have to quilt & bind it...

My aunt then wanted a table runner to match the wall hanging - I was happy to make one:

I'm making a few others for her like this too - I'll post when I'm finished!

recent baby quilt...

Another cousin is having a baby and we had her baby shower this past weekend - sadly I didn't take too many pictures to share, but I made her a few bibs (same style as the previous ones I've made) a few receiving blankets, a cute zigzag pillow, and the below quilt!

The quilt is made with Heather Ross' line of Far Far Away II. Due to the fact that it's linen, it's a bit thicker than usual weight quilting fabric, but it quilts nicely just the same. I love how it turned out and I think she did too!

Also, as an update, the looped quilt was completed and given to my aunt...unfortunately I didn't take a picture of it finished b/c I literally stitched the last of the binding onto the quilt when we were pulling into the driveway of my mother's house on the day of the above shower. sooo, no finished picture (unless I can convince her to take one and send it to me!).

I have a few more things in the works, and a few other finished projects and I'll be posting soon.

looped squares

This all started when my nana gave me a book for christmas that contained a plethora of traditional quilting patterns. I took one of the patterns, modified it a bit and used more bright and modern fabric....and ta-da! i'm obsessed.

i think my aunt has claimed dibs on this one...I'm still working on it to expand it into a full-sized bed quilt, but so far, so good.

the squares started off at 3inches a piece, and once sewn together are about 2inches. currently the quilt measures about 60x60 and with an extra row across the top (obviously necessary to cover the full size bed) it will be about 60x80 w/o a border - which i will probably also add.

fun fact - there are currently 576 squares in the above quilt. yes, i'm slightly insane.

once again i've been terrible at updating - apparently working 50+ hours/week doesn't leave much time for blogging!! however, I always seems to find time for quilting... : ) here's what i've been up to!

it's Heather Bailey's Nicey Jane fabric in the 'grass' colorway. The recipient already has three boys and is pregnant with a girl! She's not into the pinks&purples though, so I was aiming for feminine without going overboard. I think it works!

this quilt is for my sister-in-law. Her husband is current in Afghanistan and my husband and I wanted to send her a little something to keep her warm and make her smile while he's away!

my cousin is pregnant and she is the first out of all of us cousins to have a baby! needless to say, we're all pretty excited. Her baby shower was last night and while I was unable to be there in person I made sure that I sent her a little something....ok, a lot of somethings. : )

The blue / grey little boy quilt is finished! The recipients requested that his name be included somewhere on there, so I used some "Printed Treasures" fabric paper and ran it through my printer - then outlined it and instead of signing my name to the quilt, i just embroidered my initials : )

I decided that I didn't want the same exact design in each block so I went for a classic plus sign, an on point square and simple stripes. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out!

Now on to the washing - and the giving!

I may be a little nuts....I agreed to make a king sized string quilt for a family friend. Thankfully she provided all of the fabric - mostly batiks - which made it a teensy bit easier.

my "design" table...haha....if you can call it that.

I'll be taking a break from the string quilt in a moment to start working on this little guy...a baby quilt made of some Hope Valley fabric in the blue/grey colorway mixed with some shot cotton from Kaffe Fassett. Can't wait to get started!

AND i must be seriously crazy because I decided to make a hexagon art piece for the wall behind my desk at work...I figure if I can't quilt while I'm lawyering, I may as well enjoy it all around me! This is a serious work in progress as I want it to be pretty big and this handsewing is just seriously hardcore. I bow to you hand quilters out there!

now - back to work! Hopefully the next post will show some completions...

I am terrible! my blogging has been awful, but my quilting has been quite different...Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of many of my latest creations...somehow it just slips my mind as I'm rushing around trying to get it finished in time for [insert event here].

However! Here's a recent finish & then a WIP...I have a whole load of stuff made for a baby shower - but the shower isn't until next weekend so I'll have to wait to post pics : ) but i already took them!

This is generally not my forte, but a friend wanted a quilt that was more traditional / country-inspired...and of course I obliged! It's going to be a wall hanging in her living room so I thought keeping the heart in the middle would be a good representation of how the living room is the heart of the home...and then the friendship stars surround it. ok, maybe I was thinking too deeply into this, but I do like how it turned out.

This is my WIP...It barely fits a full size bed now, but a nice border will fix that. I'm thinking it'll be a good quilt for the guest room. I'm slightly obsessed with purple and this quilt clearly exemplifies that, which I love.

I'm back in action now that the wedding and honeymoon are over! We had a wonderful time with everything and I am very grateful to our friends and family who made the day so enjoyable. We're happily settling into marriage and are working on all of those thank-you notes : )

While I have been quilting like mad, I can't publish it all until about mid-march...

BUT, I did recently purchase a ton of fabric including some Hope Valley, Nicey Jane, and Dolce! We also had our first meeting of the DC Modern Quilt Guild. It was so incredibly nice to meet a few women in the area who are also as excited about fabric and quilting as I am!

Here is a quilt that I recently finished - super simple patchwork. I quilted it with double lined straight quilting. nothing too fancy, but sometimes simpler is better. You can see some Amy Butler, Bari J, Alexander Henry, Moda and some others in there....so bright and colorful!

I promise to post more regularly after my wedding is over and we're back from the honeymoon : ) (I also promise better pictures...)

my nana requested a quilt and she LOVES everything shabby chic so I decided to make a "Nana Chic" quilt. It's simple log cabin blocks sashed in white with a fun border. She loves it, and so do I!

The quilt measures approx. 45" x 60" - a great lap quilt size

Now it's ready to head to my Nana's house!

I haven't been blogging in awhile, but that doesn't mean that I haven't been quilting...quite the opposite actually. I've made two baby quilts, quilted a queen sized quilt, made a quilt top, and am currently working on a baby quilt and a lap quilt since I last blogged! PHEW!

Sometimes it's so easy for time to fly by. Here are a few pictures.

first up: ROCKETT quilt! My aunt had a baby and thus, I have a new cousin! My mom asked me to create something special for this little one, and obviously a quilt came to mind. His name is Rockett, thus I NEEDED to use this fabric from David Walker. amazing!

next: a baby quilt just because....We have a few friends who are expecting, so if anyone has a girl there's a gift ready to go!

it's the day before the bar exam & I'm doing everything to distract myself from the next two days of pure thinking! So, I made myself a couple of belts for my upcoming trip to London & Scotland.

My mom bought me two pairs of walking shorts for the trip and they came with these long "sash" like "belts" that you, i guess, were supposed to knot & tie to use as a belt. I've never been a fan of that look. Instead, I took the fabric, threw a little batting inside, used some D rings I had around & a little looped free motion quilting, and ta-da! new belts that I'll actually use!

I'm pretty happy about them both :) now I'm on to distract myself even further before my self-imposed bed time of 9pm. I tell you, this exam could make you lose your mind...thank goodness I have my sewing/quilting to save my sanity!!

happy accident

As per usual, I was attempting to escape from bar review studying so I went to make something just for myself - a laptop case for my Macbook. I measured everything, quilted it all, put it together....and then it was about an inch too small width-wise. I was kicking myself! It was so cute...and it was useless! SO, I turned it into a lunch bag : ) I've been wanting to make one anyway, and it surprisingly looks like it was always meant to carry my lunch, instead of my computer.

The fabric is by Tina Givens and is cream with pink polka dots & dark brown birds (I've actually thought that they were black until I paired it with the brown inner fabric here...and it matched!).

I did all over stippling to quilt & used 80/20 cotton batting (two layers).

I LOVE the way this turned out & I can't wait to pack my lunch now!

My mom asked for a baby quilt for a shower she's going to in October...and since I finished the last large quilt top & didn't end up getting any batting this weekend, I figured I'd just try to knock this one out.

She asked for pink & green, girly, with some sort of ballet theme...and, well, since I didn't want to go to the store and buy fabric and I didn't have any ballet fabric I decided to make some! I used 100% cotton printer sheets (called 'Printed Treasures' sheets) and just made it work!

I had a bit of a quilting snafu & ended up having to rip out part of the quilting and re-do it. Then the binding stitches had to be reinforced because for some reason I didn't put them close enough together...but it's finished! and it's pretty cute, I have to say...

String Quilt Top

I'm a little faster than I thought! I finished the string quilt top tonight and I can't wait to quilt it!!! (of course, I still have to make the back & get some batting...details...).

the quilt top measures 48" x 64" and will be the perfect couch quilt. Can't wait to finish this one up...now the big decisions: what color thread to quilt with & what color binding??

I'm planning to stipple it, so I'm thinking white thread so that the white sashing is definitely visible...hmmm...

here's a half-decent picture of the quilt top i'm working on...

I wanted to update with the whole top finished, but that will have to wait until tomorrow! I really like how it's coming together overall. I spent a bit of time playing with the arrangement while all the blocks were out on the floor (i should have taken a picture then...oops.) and I think everything will be spaced properly & all that. yayy!

now I'm off to yet another bar review class (this whole studying thing is really getting in the way of my quilting! haha. it'll be over so soon!!!).

my current project is a string quilt for one of my sorority sisters who now lives in miami. You may be asking "why does she need a quilt if she lives in MIAMI?!" easy answer - she's a law student! Most studying sadly takes place indoors and she was hoping to get something that 1. matches her current bedspread; and 2. can be large enough to cover over her while studying on the couch or in a chair.

She has asked for a preview...and because i'm cruel, I've only taken a picture of one measly block (which doesn't really provide a true idea of what the whole quilt will look like, so it's just that...a preview).

also, I'm including a picture of all of the fabric I'm using to make the quilt. I highly recommend string quilts to cut down on your stash & because I think they just make it interesting to look at.

I can't wait to work more on it this weekend!!

I recently got a new computer for graduation - a lovely MacBook. However, this is my first Mac...and while most things have come pretty easy, there still is a bit of a learning curve. Anyway, just wanted to say - bear with me while I make some aesthetic changes to the site (which basically means that I'm using new photoediting software that I'm not used to so there is some trial and error).

Otherwise, enjoy the new header! I finally made something that wasn't too tiny & that actually fills up the page properly (well, on my screen anyway). Please let me know if it's too big for your screen or something else wacky is going on & I'll do my best to fix it!

Somehow amongst my current bar review madness I managed to squeak this one out. It was unbelievably therapeutic...Now I have time to focus on a string quilt I've been working on...

cupcakes & a quilt

This past weekend was full of events. On Saturday one of my girlfriends held a cupcake swap at her house. Basically, everyone brings 12-15 cupcakes, we all taste, vote for the best, and then take home a little bit of everyone's cupcakes! fun stuff, huh?

While my cupcakes did not place (hey, I'm a quilter, not a baker. apparently the craftiness hasn't yet translated to the kitchen) I still had fun, and it was neat to see what others can whip up. I also blame it on the bar exam (like everything else). I went to the grocery store at 11:30pm Friday night and didn't start baking until midnight. also, to give you an idea of my baking novice: my purchase included the cupcake trays.

THEN, Sunday was my cousin's high school graduation party up in pennsylvania! After four long hours in traffic (a trip that should have taken 3 at most) we finally arrived. I also had in tow a quilt for a family friend that I've been meaning to finish since....well...March. I desperately quilted and assembled it on Saturday night so that I would actually have it to deliver on Sunday. phew! It was a lot of work, and I lost a significant amount of sleep, but I shall recover - and it was worth it!

This quilt is a logo quilt. The family friend has a non-profit foundation and requested that I make a quilt of their logo to hang in the main office. I received a few reference photos (included below for comparison) of the logo and then went at it.

(I omitted the third graphic because I simply can't find it....oops!) & now on to the quilt!

& now it's back to studying for the bar. Amongst the above craziness I did manage to finish 2 essays, an MPT, and an MBE section this weekend. Now it's on to more of the same....AND I get to work on a fun strip quilt for a friend & sorority sister living in Miami....in all my free time ;-)

I can't wait to start a few projects...I have a sixteen patch in mind....or some log cabin blocks to really show off the beautiful fabrics.

I had a great time at Handmade Mart in Silver Spring, MD this past weekend! So many different vendors, with so many creative ideas. I'm fairly certain that I was the only person there with actual quilts, so that was pretty fun for me.

Also, I graduated law school this past week and started studying for the bar. Sadly, studying for the bar actually takes up more time than attending law school did (strange, yes?) and therefore I have much less time to quilt. My quilting days have now been limited to Sundays (my only "free day"). I have a few things to finish and start....so we'll see what I can do before the bar!

I've been very very busy creating and quilting for the upcoming Handmade Mart. Below is a little preview. I should note: I am in LOVE with this quilt. It's the first time I used white sashing and I thoroughly enjoy the look. It won't be in every quilt that I make, but the sashing will likely make an appearance again.

also, if you look in the background, that's a quilted pillow cover that you see. I paper pieced the strips and then free motion quilted the cover. I told you I've been busy!

well, it's official. I am FINISHED with law school! I am in the process of moving to the Maryland suburbs of DC from the sometimes wonderful city of Philadelphia. While I definitely will not miss the parking situation, I will miss the people!

BUT, more good news: I've been selected to be a vendor at Handmade Mart. It's a craft fair in downtown Silver Spring, MD. I'm so excited, but I definitely have some sewing to do...

I made two baby quilts last week to distract myself while making a big logo quilt (that will eventually be finished....I'm working on it!). I find that it's hard to keep focused on large project without having a few smaller projects to work on at the same time. I also continued to practice my free motion skills and I absolutely love the way they turn out. I can't believe that I made them! These pictures were taken after they washed so they have that awesome quilted look.

as promised i got a darning foot and officially entered into the world of free motion quilting. I have to admit, it was a bit harder than i thought it would be and quite physically tiring too. BUT the end result is absolutely worth it.

my stitches are not perfect by any means, but it's a start and i'm pretty happy with how these pillows turned out.

i'm going to try to get decent pictures up here soon, but for now you'll have to live with camera phone shots!

the colors are a little off because of the camera phone, but it gets the point across. i'm pretty happy with the result! & now this afternoon i'm going to Spool & Loop with my mom, aunt & nana : )

ok, i have to confess...i've lived in philadelphia for almost three years and i rarely (if ever) go out into the city. i blame it on law school, lack of desire for nightlife, and my general nerdom. however, regardless of the reason, my knowledge of philadelphia's shops is extremely limited and fairly localized to the historic district and my neighborhood.

BUT! today, i took a chance and ventured out into the city. ok ok, it's not like I was going out blind. the truth is, i (like many others i'm sure) stalk craft blogs. one of the lucky blogs is that of Heather Ross who designs fabric & patterns, and just came out with a book (Weekend with Heather Ross). She's currently on a book tour for the aforementioned book and she was visiting philadelphia (how convenient! except that she was here when i was in maryland. storyofmylife.) and more specifically, a store entitled Spool.

I say all of this only to now say: I AM IN LOVE. and also bitter.

first, LOVE: Spool is the kind of place that i have been searching for and never found. they're super nice, and they have all of the more modern fabrics i love and have only ever seen here and there or on the interwebs.

next, bitter: have i mentioned that i'm moving in 2 months? yup. sure am. it's kind of more like 1 month, but i'll officially be totally out of philadelphia by the end of may. thus, my bitterness.

i have faith that i'll find a new mecca in maryland, but i can assure you that i won't wait so long to look for it!

and now, for the stash. obviously i had to buy some fabric!

the last two months of law school induce quilting

i've been wanting to do some projects that are cute, fun & definitely outside of the box. I first started out with this pillow. I saw something similar in a high end magazine and figured, "ummm...I can do that." and I can! I really love the way it looks AND I used a pink flannel so it's super soft as well.

Then I had the idea of making a baby quilt. Ok, quick confession...I've been wanting to make a baby quilt / playmat for awhile now, but none of my girlfriends have babies (yet!) so I've put off making them. However, I couldn't help it. I had this idea and I had to go with it, so it looks like it's being added to my etsy shop! Hopefully someone else will love it just as much as I do.

I completed a slew of new crafting goodness for the holiday season but I neglected to take pictures of a majority of the items....so, um, yea....you're going to have to wait for the pics.

I'm currently working on a quilt for my man for his birthday / our anniversary...whenever it is completed first. otherwise I've been busy applying for / waiting to hear about jobs, dealing with bar loans, outlines, and wedding plans. HOWEVER, my camera is now fully charged and I'll be taking pics and updating soon (think next week) of some works in progress.

this weekend i'm in maryland...but i'm getting out of here before the inauguration. no need to suffer any more craziness than is necessary!

It's been a little bit crazy with engagement, finals, being a bridesmaid in a wedding, engagement party, engagement pictures, & thanksgiving. oh, and law school! i had almost forgotten about that...regardless, i apologize for my lack of updating. Miss V. (see her blog link over at the right!) nicely reminded me last night that I haven't updated in awhile...soooo, here's a slew of ridiculousness of you to enjoy!

out of 3,000 entries I was one of ten winners. What did i say that i'd do?....

THEN IT GOT BETTER! We decided to auction the quilt off on ebay and donate the proceeds to Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation.
A guy named John from NYC bought the quilt you see below for $1000!! which was all donated to Toys for Tots.

overall, it was such an amazing crafting experience. i'm STILL waiting for my storm. it's been ordered, but not yet delivered. but verizon tells me that it will get here by December 17th.
i love it when technology & quilting collide.

I'm currently working on a fun project that I PROMISE that i will post them along with christmas gifts and such in the somewhat near future.

I'm also going to start making a quilt for melissak!
i'm super excited, but I'm not sure if i'm ready to dive into another full sized quilt yet. I'll take it slow, but i'm sure i'll love it once i get going.

happy (almost) halloween! This weekend I have big plans of trying my hand at a mosaic tile project....eeeek! you'll only get to see it if it rocks. lol. sorry, but i only share crafting, not crapping. it's kind of a slogan around here.

AND, here are my engagement party invitations! we've decided on a date too: 03/06/10. my extremely numerically obsessed friends tell me that it's a good date. i was glad to hear it.

MelissaK recently got married and her husband then immediately deployed. i decided that she needed something to cuddle with while he was gone. every appliance they own is red, so i figured these would fit right in.

both pillows are the same. the front is the red pieced pattern and the back is the black & white damask. they are closed with a zipper and inserted with a 16 inch plain pillow (that i also made). love itttttt.

oh, and i made another quatrefoil pillow. I CAN'T HELP MYSELF! : )

exciting news! This past weekend I got engaged! Entirely unexpected yet incredibly heartfelt and perfect. It was exactly what I had always hoped for as a little girl.

And now I get to start the planning process...of course, I have to get a real job & graduate law school first. priorities...

So hopefully I'll start to post more wedding type craftiness as the time ticks by. As for me now, I'm currently working on a few gifts for a friend's November wedding, and I may be making some items to be put in a craft fair...hmmm...exciting news! I'll be sure to post after my creations are complete, but for now you must look at the crafty way my fiance proposed - in a button box! I have to say, the man knows me. :-)

i'm super obsessed with this. mostly b/c I would have drooled over this as an active collegiate...hell, i'm still drooling over it.

I then tried my hand at stenciling fabric. I created the stencil and then went at it. I think it turned out really well. The colors are purple and white with the pillow being a marble grey...the picture didn't quite turn out as well as I had hoped, but I love it just the same!

made this one for my favorite study partner & current cat-sitter, jen. without her i probably would have failed immigration law AND legislation. and, of course, my kitties wouldn't be fed this week while i'm out of town.

sorry for the crappy cell phone pic...i forgot my camera cord...oops.

the bag is made out of black & white damask home decor weight fabric covered in clear vinyl. the inside is silver thinner weight vinyl. she wanted it beach friendly (thus all the vinyl) and i definitely believe that i succeeded in that!

I've had a lot of interest from people who want to buy some of my creations (I'm flattered and shocked!), soooo my plan is to start an online shop after finals are over. I hope to carry everything from bags (totebags, hobobags, lunchbags, makeupbags, etc...) to eyeglass cases to potholders to coasters. I also hope to be able to take custom orders too.

[but don't worry mom, I'm not dropping out of law school! : )]

found this cute project - and it was fast! after i figured out how to make them (i have this opposition to directions & patterns) i made 20 coasters in no time.

& then i finished up a bag for my boyfriend's little brother...i underestimated how much a 4 year old boy would want a messenger bag to match his sister's. oops! so i fixed that.

now that i've finished my first commissioned quilt i have a little time (and money) for random projects. i found this adorable fruity fabric that looked perfect for a kid, but being that i don't have any i thought of who would enjoy it the most and i came up with Sarah! she's my boyfriend's eight year old sister. i decided to make a smaller messenger bag out of it so that she can cart around her school work and whatever else she's playing with.

i get asked often if i still go to law school. the answer is yes; however, pictures of me sitting in class, reading and writing aren't as much fun as pictures of purses and quilts.

i may or may not have broken three needles while making this bag...
then i wised up and bought heavy duty needles...hey, i'm a beginner. gimme a break.

i'm back! i know you're excited.

i was much much too serious in my first year of law school. during this year i've learned that i need to sit back, relax and just do what i love - crafting, quilting, and re-decorating. and if i throw some studying in there too i can actually get good grades.

this blog has now officially been reclaimed and all things fun, fabulous & crafty will be available for your viewing pleasure. oh, and i suppose i'll occasionally give updates about myself as well.
